There are significant variations across the UK with regard to access to commissioned structured education that meets the national criteria. Also, even where DAFNE has been commissioned, the service is not commissioned at a rate to ensure access to courses by eligible patients.
DAFNE requires multidisciplinary team working and challenges conventional diabetes care because the patient is more empowered and actively manages their diabetes. Structured education needs to become part of the routine diabetes service and supported by the entire team. There may be a need for changes to local care pathways to effectively embed DAFNE within the service, rather than it being seen as an 'add on'. As with any new service, it can be challenging to introduce and embed DAFNE into service; however the central office provides support and regular opportunities for centres to share experiences and best practice within the DAFNE collaborative.
